About Me

I’m a handsome ginger gentleman with soft green eyes and a fondness for the simple things. I really enjoy affection and being close to people. I would do best in a calm home, as the busy energy of kids and other cats wasn’t quite my style in my previous home. I prefer to reign as the king of the castle.

I’m a steady, loyal companion who’s simply looking for a place where I can feel safe, loved and cared for.

Special Needs / Preferences

Wrex has type 2 diabetes. This condition is often caused by eating a high carb cat food. In some cats, it can be reserved and/or controlled with a strict, low carb diet.

Fortunately, he is currently in remission, meaning he is not dependent on insulin, thanks to his current diet. However, if he eats a food high in carbohydrates, or receives snacks that are high carb, or if he overeats and gains weight, he may become dependent on insulin again. Remission can also sometimes go away for no apparent reason, in which case he would need insulin again.

Understanding diabetes is critical to managing Wrex for long term success. It is imperative that someone understand the symptoms and signs of both high and low blood sugar. It is also highly recommended that someone be able to check blood sugar at home in case there is any question about how he is feeling. This monitoring at home helps to prevent vet visits and can often diagnosis serious problems much earlier than waiting for an appointment with a vet. It is easy to learn how to do and the equipment is relatively cheap.

Wrex can NOT have any of the newer oral diabetic drugs. This is because he has suffered through diabetic ketoacidosis twice now, making it very unsafe to use these drugs. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), is a life threatening condition in which prolonged high blood sugar causes the body to switch to metabolizing fat causing a serious buildup of ketones in the body. This causes nausea, pronounced electrolyte changes, inappetence, and usually requires intensive hospitalization to prevent death from organ failure. Preventing this condition is relatively easy by paying attention to his diet requirements and being able to periodically check his glucose levels at home.

Most all cat foods, include those prescription diets marketed for diabetes, are too high in carbs to maintain remission. Wrex should be fed only commercial freeze dried or frozen raw and solid pate types of canned food such as classic Fancy Feast. Dry food will almost guarantee he becomes diabetic again, as will most treats on the market except freeze dried meat treats. The canned foods that say ‘gravy’ or ‘sauce’ are also too high in carbs. These diets will require a financial commitment as they are more expensive than typical dry cat foods.
