Volunteer FAQ’s
- What volunteer opportunities are available at Simply Cats?
Volunteers support the shelter in many ways, from cleaning cat rooms and socializing cats to helping with events, admin work, and special projects. You can explore all our current volunteer positions here
- How old do I have to be to volunteer?
The minimum age to volunteer is 12.
Ages 12–13 are required to volunteer with an adult chaperone (18+).
Individuals age 14 or older may volunteer independently
All volunteers under 18 must have a signed electronic parental consent form on file before volunteering.- I’m younger than 12 but want to help! What can I do?
There are lots of ways kids can make a difference! You can make toys or blankets for our cats, collect donations from our wish list, organize a fundraiser, or spread the word about our work through social media. Check out our Special Projects page for more ideas.
- Can individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities volunteer?
Absolutely. We do our best to include all abilities. Volunteers need to be able to work independently or have a registered assisting individual volunteer alongside them. The assisting individual must also complete registration and training.
- I need volunteer hours for school. Can I volunteer at Simply Cats?
Yes! You can use our Flex volunteer positions to fulfill school requirements. Flex opportunities include tasks such as cleaning, general upkeep, laundry, landscaping, and other special projects assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator. These roles don’t involve direct hands-on work with the cats, but you’re always welcome to spend time with them after your shift.
- Can I volunteer if I need court-ordered community service hours?
At this time, we are unable to accommodate court-ordered community service.
- Can I bring a friend or family member to volunteer with me?
Friends and family can’t join your shift unless they’re also registered volunteers. If someone you know would like to help, they’ll need to complete the online Volunteer Registration form and training. Once that’s done, they can sign up for shifts right alongside you!
- Can groups volunteer together?
Yes, we welcome small groups of up to 10 people. To ensure consistency for the cats, groups must commit to volunteering with us for at least six months, with a minimum of two hours per week. We are unable to accommodate one-time volunteer groups. Group opportunities are typically available in Room Cleaning from 9am–11am Monday-Saturday.
Please contact Volunteer Coordinator for more information.- Are volunteers expected to commit to a regular schedule?
Core volunteer positions require a regular weekly shift. Consistency helps the cats feel secure and keeps the shelter running smoothly. Of course, we understand that vacations, illness, or family obligations may occasionally require a schedule adjustment. You’ll work with the Volunteer Coordinator to update your schedule as needed.
Flex volunteer roles are short-term or occasional opportunities that don’t require a weekly commitment. Tasks include cleaning, laundry, restocking supplies, outdoor maintenance, or helping with transportation. These positions help support the shelter behind the scenes and don’t involve direct hands-on work with the cats, though you’re always welcome to visit and spend time with them after your shift.
- Can I take a break from volunteering and come back later?
Core volunteers are asked to maintain a regular weekly schedule to support the cats and shelter. Consistency is important, but we understand that life happens and illness, family needs, or personal challenges may occasionally require a short break. If that happens, notify the Volunteer Coordinator. Depending on the length of your break, you may need to complete refresher training before resuming your shifts.
- Can I still volunteer if I also want to foster?
Yes! Many of our volunteers also foster, and we love when people help in multiple ways.
- Can volunteering have tax benefits?
Yes. Volunteers may deduct certain unreimbursed out-of-pocket expenses related to their service with an IRS-approved charity like Simply Cats. Please speak with your tax advisor about eligibility.
