Foster FAQ’s
- How old do I have to be to foster?
The primary foster parent must be 18 or older. We encourage the entire family, including children, to be involved in caring for the foster cats!
- How long will I have my foster kittens?
The length of a foster placement depends on age, health, and growth. Kittens often return to the shelter for spay/neuter and adoption when they reach 2–3 lbs (usually 10–14 weeks old), but illnesses or socialization needs may extend their stay. Adult cats may remain in foster care for longer periods, depending on medical or behavioral needs.
- Do I have to buy supplies for the kittens?
No. Simply Cats provides all necessary items, including food, litter, toys, and medical care. Fosters may choose to provide additional items if they wish, but it is not required.
- Can I let my foster kittens interact with my dog or cat?
Yes! Foster cats/kittens must be kept isolated for at least one week before interacting with your household pets. You’ll need to provide a safe, clean space separate from other animals. All household pets must be current on vaccinations.
- What if I have a vacation or time away planned?
The Foster Coordinator will help coordinate a temporary foster transfer to another foster home. Private pet sitters are not permitted to care for foster cats or kittens.
- Can I foster for Simply Cats and another organization at the same time?
No. Fostering for multiple organizations puts vulnerable cats and kittens at risk due to potential exposure to illnesses or unknown behavioral issues.
- Can I still volunteer in the shelter if I foster?
Yes! Many fosters also volunteer in the shelter. We will work with you to balance both roles.
- What if my foster cat or kitten has a medical or behavioral concern?
All medical care is provided and coordinated by Simply Cats. Fosters must contact the Foster Coordinator directly for any medical or behavioral concerns. Private veterinary care or outside treatment is not permitted.
- Can I foster adult cats or special needs cats?
Yes. There are opportunities to foster shy, sick, medically sensitive, or cats needing extra behavioral support. Assignments depend on your experience, home environment, and comfort level.
- Do I need transportation for vet visits or emergencies?
Yes. Fosters are responsible for bringing cats/kittens to Simply Cats for vaccinations, wellness exams, and emergencies. Reliable transportation is required.
